Regenerative Braking and Battery Recharge in Electric Vehicles

Bangkok:Activating the regenerative braking system while driving downhill in an electric vehicle indeed assists in recovering energy to the vehicle's battery.

According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Napadol Klinthong from Bangkok Thonburi University confirmed that the regenerative braking system effectively converts mechanical energy into alternating current, which is then returned to the battery. This process occurs as the permanent magnet motor exerts drag on the wheels, converting energy from motion into electricity.

While some sources suggest a potential battery capacity increase of up to 70%, the actual increase is significantly influenced by the route's distance and gradient. Tests on steep routes, like those on Doi Inthanon, typically show an increase of around 10%, rarely exceeding 20%.

Drivers should be aware of specific precautions when using regenerative braking. The system will not function if the battery is fully charged, and setting the Regen mode too high on slippery roads could be hazardous. While Regen mode helps preserve brake pads by reducing the need for frequent braking, drivers must still use the physical brake pedal, especially on steep inclines, to ensure safety.
