Bangkok: The Digital Government has emphasized its policy allowing citizens to utilize water and electricity bill information when applying for loans through the “Tang Rat” app, aiming to provide universal access to capital sources.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Sasikarn Wattanachan, Deputy Government Spokesperson, announced that the government, through the Bank of Thailand and in partnership with the Digital Government Development Agency, the Metropolitan Electricity Authority, the Provincial Electricity Authority, the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority, and the Provincial Waterworks Authority, has introduced a service that allows residents to request their water and electricity usage and payment history via the ‘Tang Rat’ app. This initiative is part of the ‘Your Data’ project, designed to enable citizens to leverage their personal data for more convenient, rapid, and secure access to financial services.
The service offers individuals whose names appear on water or electricity bill accounts the abilit
y to view and download their payment history for the previous six months at no charge. This information can serve as supporting documentation for loan applications with participating financial service providers, offering a new avenue for individuals who lack regular income to more easily obtain funding.
Moreover, credit providers can process this information automatically, ensuring it is machine-readable, digitally signed, and verified to prevent tampering. This feature aims to enhance the efficiency and reduce the costs associated with providing financial services to the public.
Individuals interested in using this service can register and verify their identity within the ‘Tang Rat’ app. Users must select the ‘Finance/Insurance’ menu, enter ‘Request for documents for financial service application’, choose the relevant agency, input their meter number, review the information, and confirm the request. The system will then save the documents on the user’s mobile device for future loan applications.
Requestin
g a history of water and electricity usage and payment through the ‘Tang Rat’ app offers a convenient, fast, and free alternative, improving loan application chances for those who consistently pay their bills. Demonstrating good payment behavior can positively impact loan approval prospects.
Ms. Sasikarn highlighted that this initiative represents a significant government effort to empower citizens to use their data to gain financial access, particularly for individuals previously unable to provide traditional income proof. The government is committed to employing digital technology to democratize financial access and overcome previous barriers. This service has been operational since June 30, 2025, and further details, along with a list of supporting loan providers, can be found on the Bank of Thailand’s website at www.bot.or.th.
