Reserve Senators Demand Election Commission Accountability Over Corruption Allegations

Bangkok: “Reserve Senators” stormed the Election Commission, demanding to meet with executives to discuss progress on corruption allegations in the election of national Senators. The group, led by Pol. Lt. Gen. Kamrob Panyakaew, expressed frustration over the lack of communication and transparency from the Election Commission (EC).

According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Lt. Gen. Kamrob Panyakaew submitted a letter to the EC requesting a meeting to discuss the 2024 senator election complaints. He criticized Mr. Sa-wang Boonmee, the EC secretary-general, for delays and avoidance of duty, particularly concerning the introduction of the controversial Senator 3 book during the national senator election on June 26, 2024. Despite an investigation by the EC, the reserve senators claim the verdicts did not align with the reported facts and have called for revisions.

Pol. Lt. Gen. Kamrob emphasized the need for improved public communication from the EC, highlighting that they have received no response to their 10 letters. He stressed the urgency of discussing these issues with EC officials and understanding the measures taken to address their concerns. The group plans to engage with investigation officers regarding their complaints and seeks dialogue with relevant directors.

Mr. Akkharawut Pongthanachritkul, another reserve senator, noted the prolonged period without engagement from EC executives, expressing a desire for direct communication with high-ranking officials. He criticized the EC’s lack of a functional public relations department, suggesting misallocation of the public relations budget for self-promotion rather than addressing public concerns. He also indicated potential future legal action if the EC continues to neglect their responsibilities.
