Return of Prakonchai Antiquities to Thailand from the United States

Bangkok: Four ancient objects from Prakonchai, Buriram, are set to be returned to Thailand from the United States, marking a significant event in the preservation of Thailand’s cultural heritage. These objects, which disappeared in 1964, include three Bodhisattvas and one Buddha image. They were part of a group of sculptures discovered in Prakhon Chai District, Buriram Province, now known as Chaloem Phra Kiat District.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Sasikarn Wattanachan, Deputy Government Spokesperson, shared that the United States Homeland Security Investigation (HSI) informed the Fine Arts Department on April 26, 2025, that the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco has removed these four Thai antiques from its registry, preparing for their return to Thailand. These antiquities were initially smuggled out from Prasat Khao Plai Bat 2.

The process to delist the artifacts began in late September 2024, as the Asian Art Museum Board conducted a public hearing and gathered additional evidence over six months. On April 22, the Board unanimously voted to officially delist the artifacts.

The Fine Arts Department will now work with the Homeland Security Investigations Office, the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Los Angeles, and the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco to finalize the guidelines and procedures for returning the antiques to Thailand.

Ms. Sasikarn emphasized that this return represents a crucial step in protecting and preserving Thailand’s cultural heritage. The Thai government remains committed to tracking and repatriating smuggled antiques to ensure the nation’s cultural heritage is preserved indefinitely.
