Rhabdomyolysis Identified as Cause of Runner’s Death at NYC Marathon

New York:The recent tragic incident at the 2026 New York City Marathon has cast a spotlight on rhabdomyolysis, a condition that led to the untimely death of runner Rachel Apa. Despite being in good health, Apa collapsed near the marathon's finish line, and doctors determined that rhabdomyolysis was the cause of her death.

According to Thai News Agency, rhabdomyolysis is a dangerous condition characterized by the breakdown of skeletal muscle cells, leading to the release of chemicals, proteins, and minerals into the bloodstream. This can affect athletes of all levels when muscles are overused beyond their capacity, causing a lack of oxygen and nutrients and resulting in muscle cell damage.

This condition can be triggered by several factors, including excessive exercise, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and hot weather conditions. Symptoms such as severe muscle pain, weakness, and dark urine can appear during or after exercise, indicating a medical emergency. If untreated, rhabdomyolysis can lead to severe complications like acute kidney injury, hyperkalemia, and compartment syndrome.

Preventative measures for athletes include systematic training, staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous exercise in hot weather, and listening to the body's warning signals. Immediate first aid and medical attention are crucial if rhabdomyolysis is suspected.
