Rising Seawater Causes Severe Flooding at Amphawa Floating Market

Samut Songkhram:High tides have caused significant flooding at Amphawa Floating Market, a major tourist attraction in the Amphawa Subdistrict of Samut Songkhram Province. The water levels in the Amphawa Canal have risen dramatically, overflowing into low-lying areas and homes along the canal. Residents, some of whom have lived in the area for 60 years, report unprecedented flooding levels, with water reaching the upper floors of their homes and causing considerable hardship.

According to Thai News Agency, the ongoing high tide situation in Samut Songkhram Province continues to affect the public, particularly in the Amphawa Floating Market area. Residents have expressed that while they are accustomed to managing high tides annually, this year's situation is notably severe, with water levels never previously reaching such heights.

Villagers attribute the severe flooding to a combination of a high tide pushing upstream and water flowing from upstream, which has caused water levels to rise higher than usual. They noted that, in contrast to past flooding events caused by dam releases, which typically subsided within a few days, the current high tide has resulted in continuous flooding. Initially, only the lower floors were affected, but now the water has reached the upper floors of houses.

The Samut Songkhram Provincial Administration has issued warnings to residents in low-lying areas along rivers and canals to remain vigilant as high tides are expected to continue from October 27th to November 5th. Residents are urged to closely monitor the situation and take necessary precautions to protect their property from potential flooding.
