Lampang: A young man met a tragic end when rocks fell from the mountain and crushed him to death inside his car. A large rock rolled down from the mountain and landed on the roof of a car, piercing through to the driver's side. A 42-year-old man died instantly, while his wife, who was also in the car, was uninjured.

According to Thai News Agency, the incident occurred on the Thoen-Li road at kilometer marker 117 in Na Pong Subdistrict, Thoen District, Lampang Province. Authorities found a blue-gray ISUZU pickup truck with Chiang Mai license plates damaged at the scene, including the windshield and driver's side roof. The driver, Mr. Sonthaya, 42, was found dead at the scene, while his wife, Ms. Atcharaphan, 40, was uninjured.

Ms. Atcharaphan described the harrowing moment. She was returning from errands in Sisaket Province and heading towards Doi Tao District, Chiang Mai Province, when her car skidded off the road. The vehicle was undamaged, and she was uninjured. Good Samaritans assisted, and they continued driving. However, just a few meters later, a large rock fell and struck the car's roof, shattering the windshield and causing Mr. Sonthaya's instant death.

Mr. Nithat Pangkilinan, head of the Mae Phrik Highway Section at the Highway District 1 office, explained that the rockfall was likely due to rain and waterlogging, a natural disaster. He noted the road's riskiness and that signs and cones are in place as warnings. He advised drivers to avoid driving close to the mountainous edge during the rainy season.

Regarding responsibility, the district office is generally responsible for accidents resulting from negligence. However, in this case, the accident was due to a natural disaster and not negligence by the district office.
