Royal Rainmaking Unit in Chiang Mai Deployed to Combat Rising Air Pollution and Hotspots

Chiang mai: The Royal Rainmaking Department is adjusting its operational plan to combat air pollution in northern Thailand. A new air modification unit will be opened in Chiang Mai to bolster its mission to alleviate dust in upper northern Thailand, following continuous increases in air pollution levels and hotspots, which are impacting public health widely.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Rachen Silapraya, Director-General of the Department of Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation, revealed that due to the high levels of particulate matter in many areas of the northern region this morning, coupled with the increase in hotspots both in Thailand and neighboring countries, reflecting the severity of the forest fire and open burning problem, he has ordered a revision of operational plans for April. He also announced the preparation of a weather modification unit in Chiang Mai to urgently alleviate the problem in the upper northern region.

Meanwhile, the weather modification unit in Phitsanulok province will continue its mission until the end of April to monitor the lower northern region. The focus will be on using weather modification techniques to stimulate cloud formation to help absorb and disperse particulate matter in target areas, increase atmospheric humidity, and reduce particulate matter levels.

The operation will be based heavily on weather conditions, such as relative humidity, wind direction, and cloud formation, to ensure maximum efficiency.

The Director-General of the Royal Rainmaking Department also requested cooperation from the public in the northern region to avoid outdoor activities, wear dust masks, and closely monitor air quality conditions during this period.
