Bangkok: The Royal Thai Army has announced its conscription requirement for 2026, setting the figure at 84,380 recruits. 22,062 individuals have already applied online, leaving 62,318 positions to be filled. Benefits for conscripts include a monthly stipend of 11,000 baht, and comprehensive mental health checks for instructors will be implemented. The Army is also addressing the issue of fraudulent accounts used for scams.
According to Thai News Agency, a press conference was held at the new Army Club on Rama 9 Road by the Army Headquarters, detailing the conscription options for the year 2026. The selection process will occur between April 1-12, excluding April 6. Major General Sompol Palathai, Deputy Commander of the Territorial Defense Command, stated that Thai men aged 21 (born in 2005), and those aged 22 to 29 (born between 1997 and 2004) who have never undergone conscription selection, are required to participate. This includes those who have received deferments or whose selection process was incomplete in the previous year.
This year sees 477,435 conscripts required for drafting against the need for 84,380 recruits. The Army requires 42,926 personnel, the Navy 11,101, the Air Force 6,704, the Office of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence 770, and the Royal Thai Armed Forces 817. The selection process for conscription examinations will prioritize suitable locations to ensure a smooth and convenient process.
Lieutenant General Kriengchai Prasongsukarn, Director of the Army Medical Department, highlighted that 37 Army hospitals will provide a comprehensive healthcare system for new recruits, covering both physical and mental health. The Army has deployed medical committees at examination sites to ensure transparency and fairness, and a war room has been established for consultation and decision-making.
The Army is also prioritizing the mental health readiness of trainers, with nationwide training and facility inspections. Recruits will undergo medical examinations categorized into four readiness groups, allowing instructors to tailor training to individual capabilities. New recruits will have personal QR codes for quick access to their medical information in emergencies. The Army also emphasizes its commitment to gender diversity, ensuring suitable accommodation and facilities.
Major General Teodsak Wongchan, Director of the Army Finance Department, outlined the monetary benefits for new conscripts, totaling 11,000 baht. The Army is working to address issues related to fraudulent accounts to ensure soldiers receive their rightful entitlements. Orders have been issued to prevent any unauthorized deductions from soldiers' salaries.
Major General Kasem Pinkaew, Director of the Army Inspector General's Office, emphasized that punishment exceeding prescribed Army regulations is prohibited. Any violations will result in disciplinary and criminal action. Meanwhile, Lieutenant General Thitiphan Thanacharo, Director of the Army Education Department, confirmed that new recruits would receive 22 high-quality items, including custom-made uniforms and other essentials.
