Mae Sai: The Royal Thai Army has swiftly responded to severe flooding in the Mae Sai District of Chiang Rai Province by deploying military engineers to strategically place Big Bags to prevent water from inundating residential areas.
According to Thai News Agency, the flooding, caused by persistent heavy rain in upstream Myanmar, has rapidly impacted the Tham Pha Chom community, Ban Mae Sai, Tambon Wiang Pang Kham, Amphoe Mae Sai. Water has stagnated on numerous roads, with overflow beginning around noon today. In response, General Pana Klaewplodthuk, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army, has directed local military units to provide immediate assistance. The 37th Army Region has mobilized volunteer soldiers, in collaboration with the Special Task Force of the King Taksin Army and the Department of Military Engineering, to work with local government bodies. Their efforts focus on evacuating residents, relocating belongings to safer areas, and dispatching medical teams to deliver essential healthcare services.
The Royal Thai Army is also addressing the overflow situation affecting Sai Lom Joy Market, Koh Sai Community, and Mai Lung Khan Community, as well as areas under construction near the unfinished riverbank. The 602nd Engineer Battalion of the 11th Engineer Regiment has urgently deployed Big Bags and sandbags to reinforce embankments and protect homes from flooding.
Current assessments, in coordination with local agencies, indicate that the water level beneath the Friendship Bridge has peaked at 86 centimeters, with some areas experiencing flooding up to 20 centimeters. Fortunately, the water level is steadily decreasing and is expected to stabilize soon.
