Royal Thai Army Refutes Allegations of Assault Against Cambodian Woman

Bangkok: The Royal Thai Army has categorically denied reports suggesting that rangers assaulted a Cambodian woman. The Army’s response comes amid accusations from the Cambodian Senate President concerning the treatment of border soldiers and prisoners of war. The Thai Army maintains that these allegations aim to tarnish its reputation and insists that Thailand adheres to international standards, contrary to claims from Cambodia.

According to Thai News Agency, Major General Winthai Suvari, an Army spokesman, addressed the Cambodian Senate President’s remarks made during the 33rd National Sangha Assembly. These remarks included allegations about security issues along the Thai-Cambodian border and accusations based on distorted reports from Cambodian media that have affected the Thai Army’s image.

The Army spokesman clarified the situation regarding soldiers’ remains found in the border area, asserting that they belong to Cambodian soldiers who perished in the July 2015 clashes. He criticized the Cambodian authorities for abandoning the remains, causing distress to communities on both sides of the border. The Thai Army has repeatedly requested Cambodia to collect the remains to ensure proper rites, a request that remains unheeded.

Major General Suvari also addressed the case of 18 Cambodian prisoners of war held by Thailand. He emphasized that Thailand has been caring for these prisoners according to international and humanitarian principles, with continuous oversight by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). He highlighted that Cambodia has been misrepresenting the situation to create tension and spread misinformation.

Regarding claims from Cambodian media about the assault and rape of a Cambodian woman by Thai rangers in Svay Chek, the Royal Thai Army has conducted thorough investigations in coordination with the Royal Thai Navy and local agencies and found these allegations to be baseless. The Army emphasized that such reports are intended to defame Thailand and assured that its actions are consistent with international laws and regulations.

The Army spokesman further accused Cambodia of using deceitful tactics to mislead the international community. He expressed hope that the global audience would discern the truth and not fall for the false narratives propagated by certain Cambodian authorities.
