Royal Thai Army Strengthens Border Control Measures at Chong An Ma

Ubon ratchathani: The Royal Thai Army recently organized a media tour to assess the situation at the Thai-Cambodian border, specifically focusing on the strategic area of Chong An Ma. This initiative comes as the Army Commander-in-Chief prepares for a visit aimed at bolstering border control measures between Thailand and Cambodia. The Army spokesperson reaffirmed the continuation of three key approaches to maintaining security in the areas of Chong An Ma, Hill 500, and Hill 677.

According to Thai News Agency, Major General Winthai Suvari, spokesperson for the Royal Thai Army, led the media tour and elaborated on the Army's strategies following the successful capture of Chong An Ma, Hill 500, and Hill 677. These locations in Ubon Ratchathani Province were secured during the December 2015 border clashes. The success of these operations was attributed to strategic adjustments based on lessons learned from initial confrontations. The operations were deemed challenging due to the steep and forested terrain, necessitating approach by foot.

Looking forward, the Royal Thai Army remains committed to three main objectives as outlined by General Phana Klaewplodthuk, the Commander-in-Chief: maintaining vigilance, establishing strong positions for safe operations during emergencies, and addressing the issue of unexploded ordnance by clearing the areas and constructing roads for logistical support.

Colonel Thalat Phoolsawat, deputy commander of Task Force 1, reported that after Thai forces gained complete control of the Chong An Ma area on December 17, 2025, Cambodian forces retreated approximately 1 kilometer. Previously, Cambodian troops had been encroaching upon the area since 1999, constructing 25 houses which then expanded as families and investors moved in, seeking land title documents.

Following the Thai occupation of Chong An Ma, it was found that Cambodia had expanded their presence with the construction of over 200 houses. The Thai Army has since demolished these encroachments, including the Ta Om monument erected by Cambodia, and has restored the area to its prior state. Currently, the situation is reported to be stable.

General Phana Klaewplodthuk is scheduled to visit Chong An Ma, Hill 500, and Hill 677 on April 4, 2026, to assess the situation firsthand and provide policy guidance to the troops stationed in the area.
