Bangkok: The Royal Thai Navy is ramping up security measures in response to a surge of incursions by a group labeled as the "Cambodian fishing boat gang" within Thai waters. The naval forces have intensified patrols and are closely monitoring the movement of armed Cambodian fishing boats that have been causing disturbances.
According to Thai News Agency, the Royal Thai Navy has identified between 20 and 30 Cambodian vessels entering and exiting Thai territory. The navy is actively working to intercept any illegal Thai seafood being smuggled into Cambodia. Commander Natthakit Saengphol, Chief of Staff of the Royal Thai Navy Region 1 Operational Fleet, highlighted that these incursions have become more frequent, with Cambodian boats often crossing the maritime border, encroaching about a mile beyond the designated boundary.
Commander Natthakit noted that Cambodian vessels are being detected by radar and are often apprehended when they fail to retreat. While most boats turn back upon detection, those that persist in their encroachment face intervention and arrest by the Royal Thai Navy.
The possibility of Cambodia forming an armed fishing fleet is being closely monitored. Commander Natthakit emphasized that due to past border conflicts, the navy is gathering intelligence and remains vigilant against potential provocations or harassment. International rules for the use of force have been established to address any such incidents.
In light of these developments, the Royal Thai Navy has been instructed to assert Thailand's territorial rights firmly. Commander Natthakit referenced a past encounter with Vietnamese vessels that resulted in a collision with the HTMS Thepa in 2025. In such situations, the use of weapons, including warning shots, is authorized if necessary.
Additionally, the navy has uncovered illegal activities involving Cambodian vessels entering Thai waters to smuggle seafood, including salmon, back to Cambodia. These vessels have been arrested, and all goods have been confiscated.
