Royal Thai Police Report Success in Two-Week Operation Against Scammers

Bangkok: The Royal Thai Police have reported satisfactory outcomes following a two-week operation targeting scammers, resulting in the arrest of 7,000 criminals. The operation also involved a strategic meeting with representatives from six countries to forge a joint agreement to combat scam activities.

According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Maj. Gen. Siriwat Deepo, the deputy spokesman for the Royal Thai Police, highlighted the government’s commitment to addressing scam activities as a national priority. The national police chief has encouraged police forces globally to adopt similar measures. The crackdown has led to 7,000 arrests related to online criminal activities, including mule accounts and ghost SIM cards. Additionally, multiple online gambling platforms have been dismantled, with assets worth over 41 million baht confiscated.

The Royal Thai Police have collaborated with the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society and various online platforms to address illegal internet use. The NBTC has conducted surveys of 1,600 telephone signal towers and identified locations where illegal activities are occurring.

Internationally, Pol. Lt. Gen. Jiraphop Phuridet, Assistant Police Chief and Deputy Director of the Police Crime Suppression Division, attended the Six-Party Ministerial Meeting on Joint Crackdown against Telecom and Cyber Fraud in China. The meeting, involving Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and China, focused on addressing transnational scamming activities. Mr. Liu Zhongyi, Assistant Minister of Public Security in China, emphasized the economic damage caused by transnational human trafficking through telecommunications.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to intensify efforts against telecommunications and online fraud. Participating countries committed to enforcing laws within their borders, preventing scams, and targeting scammer bases. They agreed to coordinate investigations, exchange evidence, and facilitate the repatriation of suspects. Seized assets will be tracked and returned to victims. The countries will also enhance regional cooperation in managing platforms, telecommunications, cryptocurrencies, and international exchanges. Pol. Lt. Gen. Jiraphop assured that the Royal Thai Police will continue technological crackdowns to protect Thai citizens and maintain national sovereignty, working alongside the government and armed forces.
