Rubio Pushes for Ceasefire Agreement Between Thailand and Cambodia to Be Reinstated by Next Week

Bangkok: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed efforts by the U.S. government to encourage Thailand and Cambodia to re-engage with the ceasefire agreement coordinated by President Donald Trump, targeting a resumption of compliance by early next week.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Rubio stated that despite the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia being previously halted through a written agreement, recent violations have emerged due to ongoing complaints and grievances on both sides. These issues have disrupted the implementation of the agreement. The U.S. is now working to bring all parties back to the negotiating table. Discussions have already been held with the Thai Foreign Minister, and further talks with representatives from both countries are planned to coincide with the ASEAN ministerial meeting on Monday. President Trump was also involved in discussions over the weekend.

Mr. Rubio likened the situation to the conflict between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, emphasizing the importance of a signed agreement as a means to pressure conflicting parties to adhere to prior commitments. In the case of Thailand and Cambodia, the agreement had been effective in halting the fighting. Despite new clashes, the United States remains focused on reinstating the original ceasefire agreement by Monday or Tuesday.
