Moscow: Russia and Ukraine have announced separate unilateral ceasefires, highlighting their differing positions on historic holidays and ongoing diplomatic issues.
According to Thai News Agency, the Russian Ministry of Defense declared a ceasefire from May 8-9, as ordered by President Vladimir Putin, to commemorate Victory Day, marking the 81st anniversary of Russia's victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. The ministry cautioned that any attempts by Ukraine to disrupt the celebrations would result in a severe missile attack on central Kyiv.
In contrast, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a two-day ceasefire on May 5-6, emphasizing the value of human lives over anniversary celebrations. He urged Russia to cease fire immediately, rather than waiting until May 8.
This year, Russia's Victory Day parade in Red Square will proceed without the display of military equipment for the first time in over 20 years. The decision is attributed to security concerns stemming from Ukrainian drone attacks. Zelenskyy contends that this decision reflects Russia's fear of Ukrainian drones and indicates a weakening of the Russian military.
The unilateral ceasefire announcements come amid pressure from the US Trump administration for both nations to agree on a 30-day ceasefire. Despite the declarations, reports of ongoing attacks in conflict zones persist from both sides.
