Galati: A Russian drone crashed into a Romanian apartment building, injuring two people. Romania, a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), revealed on Friday that a drone crashed into a southeastern city during a Russian airstrike on neighboring Ukraine the previous night, injuring two people. This marks the first time since the war that a drone has landed in a densely populated area of Romania, causing injuries.
According to Thai News Agency, Romania's emergency response agency revealed that the drone crashed into the roof of a 10-story apartment building in Galati before exploding, resulting in a fire inside an apartment on the 10th floor. Rescuers provided first aid to two injured individuals at the scene and immediately evacuated 70 people from the building. The agency also stated that all the explosives attached to the drone had completely detonated and the fire was brought under control.
The events unfolding in Romania, also a member of the European Union, are likely to increase tensions along NATO's eastern border, at a time when Ukraine's allies are expressing concerns that Russia's war in Ukraine could spill over across its borders.
The Romanian Ministry of Defense stated that Romania, which shares a 650-kilometer land border with Ukraine, has faced 28 incidents of Russian drone incursions into its airspace since Moscow began its offensive against Ukrainian ports along the Danube River.
Romania's Foreign Minister, Oana Toiu, announced via the X platform that Romania would take necessary diplomatic measures in response to this serious violation of international law and Romanian airspace. She also stated that Romania had informed its allies and the NATO Secretary-General about the incident and requested that measures be taken to expedite the delivery of an anti-drone system to Romania.
