Sa Kaeo: Sa Kaeo has reported its first case of anthrax infection. The patient, a 53-year-old wood cutter from Tambon Tha Yaek, Mueang District, has a history of consuming raw meat dishes such as koi and soi ju. Health officials are preparing to investigate the outbreak and monitor individuals at risk and those who may have been exposed to the infection.

According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Tharapong Kapko, the Public Health Doctor of Sa Kaeo Province, disclosed that the patient was admitted to Pattaya Patthamakhun Hospital in Chonburi Province with symptoms including sores on his head, neck, arms, and legs. Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of anthrax bacteria. The patient reportedly engaged in risky behaviors such as daily alcohol consumption and regular intake of raw meat, with his last consumption occurring approximately a week before his symptoms appeared. It is suspected that the patient contracted the infection from improperly cooked meat.

Health authorities are set to conduct an investigation today to monitor at-risk groups and individuals who may have been infected. The public in Mueang Sa Kaeo District and surrounding areas is being urged to adhere to strict disease prevention measures. This includes avoiding contact with sick or unusually dead livestock such as cows, buffalo, goats, and sheep, and ensuring thorough personal hygiene after animal contact. Residents are advised to consume only certified safe meat and ensure that all food is cooked thoroughly. In the event of encountering sick or abnormally dead animals, the public is instructed not to butcher them but to report immediately to livestock officials. Anyone experiencing any unusual symptoms is advised to seek medical attention promptly.
