Bangkok: The journey of “Jao Yu” Ballang Thapthimdaeng, a Thai national taekwondo athlete, who overcame obstacles with determination to win a gold medal at the SEA Games.
According to Thai News Agency, “Yu” Ballang Thapthimdaeng, the Thai national taekwondo fighter, held the belief that “every drop of sweat is never in vain” throughout his career, a mindset that led him to triumph at the SEA Games. Competing for the first time in the men’s under 68 kg taekwondo sparring event, Yu defeated Nusair Lao from the Philippines in the final, with scores of 11-5 and 18-2. His victory was celebrated with a gesture inspired by his favorite movie, “Saeb Sanit Sit Sai Na.”
Yu’s journey to SEA Games glory is a testament to his dedication and resilience. An ordinary boy from Prachuap Khiri Khan province with a passion for taekwondo, Yu’s rigorous training and perseverance paved the way for his success. He became the second male taekwondo athlete to win a world championship for Thailand in 2025, claimed a gold medal at the 2025 Summer University Games, and most recently, triumphed at the Southeast Asian Games hosted by Thailand.
The support from Yu’s parents was instrumental in his success, providing him with strength and motivation even during challenging times. Despite setbacks, such as being eliminated in the round of 16 at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Yu’s determination never wavered. He returned stronger, driven by the encouragement of his family and the desire to make them proud.
Yu’s success is also fueled by his dedication to Thai sports fans. His disciplined training, learning from past mistakes, and strategic planning have set him on a path toward even greater achievements, including the Asian Championships and Olympic gold medals.
As a promising new athlete for Thai taekwondo, Yu Ballang Thapthimdaeng is poised to fill the shoes of retired two-time Olympic gold medalist Panipak Wongpattanakit. Yu is committed to pushing his limits and aims to achieve success at the next Olympics in the United States in three years.
