Bangkok: The Senate held a closed-door meeting to discuss the background check report on the two Election Commissioners before voting. An extraordinary session of the Senate, chaired by Senate President Mongkol Surasajja, was convened to address the urgent matter of approving the nominees for the Election Commission (EC): Mr. Jirutt Visalvichit and Mr. Monthol Sudprasert. The session followed the completion of a confidential report by the Committee on Background Checks, Conduct, and Ethical Conduct, chaired by Senator Kamol Rodklai. According to Thai News Agency, Senator Premsak Piayura voiced concerns about the vote's timing, citing issues from the February 8th election such as ballot irregularities and questionable transparency, which led to public distrust in the Election Commission. He argued that with public confidence in the EC at a record low of 20%, it was crucial to reassess the commission's structure and role to prevent exacerbating the situation. Dr. Premsak advocated for transparency and accounta bility within the EC and stressed the need for academic proposals to enhance oversight. Senator Nantana Nanthavaropas raised concerns about the background check committee's investigation into the nominees' ties with political parties, as both were associated with the Ministry of Transport. She emphasized the importance of integrity and independence as stipulated by the Election Commission Act, questioning whether these criteria were adequately examined. Meanwhile, Senator Chinchote Saengsang defended the Senate's actions, stating that accusations against senators in the election collusion case were unfounded and required further investigation. He clarified that the Senate's role was to consider and approve nominations submitted by high-ranking judicial and parliamentary officials, and criticized false accusations against senators, urging patience for the court's verdict. The meeting transitioned to a closed session to deliberate on the background check report of the nominees for the Election Commission, fo llowing the senators' debate on the first part of the bill.
