Senator Patima Defends Self-Sufficiency Advice Against Criticism

Bangkok: Senator Patima Jiraphat issued a statement clarifying his recent remarks during an urgent debate in the Senate concerning the impact of the Middle Eastern conflict on Thailand. He had suggested that citizens grow vegetables and raise chickens amidst the energy crisis, a proposal that drew significant criticism.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Patima explained that his intention was to raise public awareness on coping strategies during real crises. He referred to the COVID-19 pandemic as an example, where urban residents, especially in Bangkok, faced challenges in accessing food, while those in rural areas could sustain themselves through small-scale farming and livestock. He emphasized that the current energy shortage has increased living costs, necessitating self-reliant solutions.

Mr. Patima shared his personal experience of growing vegetables in five styrofoam boxes on his rooftop. He stated that while he doesn't rely entirely on them for sustenance, it helps cut down expenses. He reiterated the Sufficiency Economy philosophy of King Rama IX, advocating for self-reliance in times of hardship.

Mr. Patima affirmed that his suggestions were not meant to mislead but to promote the sufficiency economy concept as a viable solution during unforeseen crises, such as energy shortages and ongoing conflicts.
