Bangkok: Senators expressed concerns about the government’s handling of the US tax hike problem during a Senate meeting chaired by Mr. Boonsong Noisophon, the Second Vice President of the Senate. The meeting focused on the challenges posed by the 36% tariff imposed by the United States on Thai products, which has significantly affected the domestic supply chain and competitiveness in the global market.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Pinyaphat Sansaneeyawiwin highlighted the adverse impact of the US tariff on various Thai exports, causing increased production costs and reduced competitiveness in the US market. The repercussions extend to related industries such as food, beverage, and automotive, affecting both labor and exports. Ms. Pinyaphat proposed several measures to mitigate these effects, including establishing a service center to support exporters, promoting research and innovation to enhance product value, and providing low-interest financial support to affected businesses.
Ms. Pinyaphat emphasized the need for coordination among relevant agencies, such as the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Finance, alongside private sector cooperation. She suggested forming a special working group to analyze the situation and devise concrete measures. Additionally, a forum for public and private sectors to discuss tax measures was recommended to foster collaboration and idea exchange.
In addressing long-term strategies, Ms. Pinyaphat advocated for reducing reliance on a single market and exploring opportunities in regions like Southeast Asia and Africa. She stressed the importance of developing high-value products with innovative designs and fostering regional and global networks to ensure economic sustainability.
Mr. Thewarit Maneechai raised concerns about the impact on the labor sector, particularly in industries like electronics, processing, and agriculture. With approximately 6.4 million workers at risk, he urged the Prime Minister and relevant parties to prioritize labor issues in negotiations. Mr. Thewarit called for measures to assist workers alongside economic considerations, emphasizing the importance of their inclusion in discussions.
