Bangkok: A senior monk from a renowned temple in Bangkok, along with his accomplice, has been apprehended for allegedly exploiting novice monks through indecent acts. The arrests were made by the Paveena Foundation in cooperation with the Anti-Trafficking Division, following serious accusations against the monks.
According to Thai News Agency, the two monks were accused of using mobile games as a means to lure novices into their quarters, where they were sexually assaulted and secretly filmed. The authorities discovered over 100 explicit videos involving more than 30 novice monks. The investigation was initiated after the mothers and grandmothers of three novices reported the abuse to the Paveena Foundation. Recently, four more victims have sought assistance to file additional charges, with revelations of another monk's involvement in the crime.
The parents and guardians of seven affected novices met with Ms. Paveena Hongsakul, president of the Paveena Hongsakul Foundation for Children and Women, seeking assistance in bringing more victims forward. Following the events of February 26, 2026, Ms. Paveena guided the guardians and three novices to report the abuse to Pol. Maj. Gen. Jaroonkiat Panngaeo and Pol. Maj. Gen. Witthaya Sriprasertphap at the Central Investigation Bureau.
On March 20, 2026, Pol. Maj. Gen. Witthaya ordered the issuance of arrest warrants for the two senior monks. The mothers of the victims reported prolonged abuse, where the monks manipulated their authority to exploit the novices. The monks would lure the novices with games, then proceed with indecent acts while secretly filming them.
The immediate arrest and confession of Phra Ta and Phra Toon led to their defrocking and subsequent charges, including rape by coercion and possession of child pornography. They were accused of exploiting their positions to commit the acts against the novices under their care.
On March 21, 2026, the guardians of more victims reported further allegations against the monks. They highlighted that similar acts were committed by other monks, indicating a broader issue within the temple. They have sought the Paveena Foundation's assistance in pursuing legal action.
The guardians of a 15-year-old former novice revealed that he had been abused for nearly three years. The boy, initially too frightened to report the abuse, was inspired by the foundation's involvement to come forward.
Ms. Paveena expressed gratitude to law enforcement for their swift action and emphasized the importance of legal consequences for such crimes. The Anti-Trafficking Division is preparing to interview more victims as the investigation continues.
The Paveena Foundation is actively coordinating with various ministries to ensure the well-being and future of the affected novices. They plan to assist in educational arrangements and psychological rehabilitation, as well as pursue justice through the judicial process. The foundation remains committed to supporting the victims and ensuring they receive the help and compensation they deserve.
