Bangkok: Prime Minister Sihasak confirmed the cancellation of MOU 44 but stated that negotiations would not cease, following Cambodia's protests. He indicated that UNCLOS law would be used instead. He revealed that the proposal would be submitted to the Cabinet today and declined to comment on whether talks with Cambodia would be held at the ASEAN summit in the Philippines.
According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sihasak Phuangketkaew, provided an interview regarding whether the Cabinet meeting today would consider revoking MOU 44, stating that it would, and that he would disclose the details after consideration.
When asked about Cambodia's stance, which seemed to refuse to accept the cancellation of MOU 44, Mr. Sihasak said that while the MOU has been cancelled, negotiations have not ended. Efforts are still proceeding under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and Cambodia has also stated that negotiations must be conducted under international law.
When questioned about potential actions if Cambodia did not accept the terms and refused to continue negotiations, Mr. Sihasak noted that he had not yet expressed any stance on the matter.
When asked whether he would hold talks with Cambodia during the ASEAN summit in the Philippines, Mr. Sihasak did not answer the question before immediately entering the command building to attend the cabinet meeting.
