Sihasak Urges Caution Amid Hun Sen’s China Visit

Bangkok: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sihasak Phuangketkeo, has addressed concerns surrounding Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen's visit to China, advising against being influenced by news reports. He emphasized that the visit reflects the existing relationship between Cambodia and China, and that China is adept at conducting itself diplomatically.

According to Thai News Agency, Sihasak reassured that China's engagement with Cambodia is a routine diplomatic procedure and should not be misinterpreted as taking sides. He advised against being swayed by reports, some of which may originate from Cambodia to serve its interests. Sihasak highlighted that China is mindful of its position and the potential impacts on its bilateral relations.

Addressing concerns about Cambodia's reported request to purchase ammunition from China, Sihasak mentioned that such agreements were pre-determined and not directly linked to Thai-Cambodian relations. He acknowledged China's interests in Cambodia, including existing military bases, but stressed the importance of avoiding actions that could exacerbate the Thai-Cambodian conflict.

Regarding the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), Sihasak reiterated Thailand's commitment to the framework. He stated that while the compromise process under UNCLOS continues, any outcome must be carefully evaluated for fairness and alignment with Thailand's interests. If deemed unfavorable, further discussions would be necessary to address the maritime boundary issue between Thailand and Cambodia.
