Bangkok: Singapore's Prime Minister is set to visit Thailand to attend the 5th Thailand-Singapore Leaders' Retreat tomorrow. This event marks the revival of the Leaders' Retreat after an 11-year hiatus, focusing on strategic collaborations between the two nations as Anutin Charnvirakul prepares for his upcoming ASEAN chairmanship.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Ratchada Thanadirek, Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced that Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul is ready to welcome His Excellency Mr. Lawrence Wong, Prime Minister of the Republic of Singapore. This visit is at the invitation of the Thai Prime Minister and aims to set the direction for future cooperation between Thailand and Singapore. The discussions will cover clean energy, rice trade, cross-border payment systems, tourism, and combating online fraud, alongside exchanging views on regional and international matters.
The Prime Minister's spokesperson highlighted that the two leaders will endorse a joint statement on a strategic partnership, serving as a framework to enhance relations and bring tangible benefits to their citizens. The meeting is particularly significant in the ASEAN context, with both nations set to take on the ASEAN chairmanship in 2027 and 2028. This provides an opportunity for strategic dialogue to strengthen ASEAN's unity in the face of evolving economic and geopolitical challenges.
Additionally, the retreat will include the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security of Thailand and the Ministry of Social and Family Development of Singapore. This agreement aims to bolster cooperation in social development and improve the quality of life for citizens of both countries.
On September 2, 2026, the two leaders will convene at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Bangkok for the retreat, followed by the exchange of Memorandums of Understanding and a joint press conference. The Thai Prime Minister will then host a dinner in honor of the Singaporean Prime Minister at the Santi Maitri Building, Government House.
