Social Security Office Warns Against Sharing Unverified Information Online

Accra:The Social Security Office (SSO) has issued a warning to the public to verify facts before sharing information on social media, emphasizing that spreading false information is a legal offense.

According to Thai News Agency, the SSO highlighted the importance of caution, particularly in the past week, when a significant amount of election-related information was circulated on social media. This includes both helpful information and content that could lead to confusion or misunderstanding. The public is urged to confirm the facts and sources of information before sharing it to prevent the spread of inaccuracies.

The SSO has identified certain messages on social media as distorted and inaccurate. The system administrator has clarified the facts and asked those responsible to remove such messages to prevent misleading the public further.

Spreading false information through a computer system can be an offense under the Computer Crime Act B.E. 2550 (2007) and its amendments, depending on the specifics of the case. Importing certain types of false information may be connected to Section 14 (1), and disseminating or forwarding such information knowingly may relate to Section 14 (5). However, each case must be evaluated based on content, intent, and facts, as not all incorrect information constitutes a legal offense.

The SSO urges the public to verify information through reliable sources or official communication channels of relevant agencies before sharing. If messages appear suspicious or lack confirmation, the public should refrain from sharing until the information is clearly verified, helping to reduce the spread of inaccuracies and fostering a shared understanding in society.
