Solar Power Initiative Opens for Online Applications Across Thailand

Bangkok: The "Solar Power for the People" program is now available for online application through the MEA and PEA websites. This initiative, known as the "People's Solar" program, allows citizens to transform their rooftops into power generators, reducing electricity bills and providing the opportunity to sell excess electricity to generate income.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Ratchada Thanadirek, spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced that the "Solar for the People" project aims to provide homeowners with the opportunity to install rooftop solar panels. This move allows individuals not only to generate their own electricity and reduce costs but also to sell surplus power back to the grid. The project encourages citizens to transition from electricity consumers to producers of clean energy, contributing to a decrease in the country's reliance on fossil fuels over time.

The program is accessible online, targeting electricity users in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, and Samut Prakan through the Metropolitan Electricity Authority's My Energy system. Meanwhile, users in other provinces can apply via the Provincial Electricity Authority's PPIM system. The initiative includes purchasing excess electricity at a rate of 2.20 baht per unit for a decade, with a maximum proposed sales volume of 5 kilowatts per meter. The application process provides comprehensive details on eligibility, necessary documents, and conditions for participation.

The procedure for engaging in the program involves submitting an application online, verifying eligibility, announcing results, signing a power purchase agreement, and having the system inspected. This ensures that the power supply connection meets safety standards.

Ms. Rachada highlighted the government's directive for the Ministry of Interior, the Metropolitan Electricity Authority, and the Provincial Electricity Authority to create a One-Stop Service model. This approach aims to streamline procedures and improve public convenience. The government is eager to promote clean energy adoption starting at the household level.

"This project not only helps reduce electricity costs for the public but also provides households with the opportunity to produce clean energy, earn income from surplus electricity, and contribute to building sustainable energy and environmental security for the country," stated Ms. Rachada.
