Somchai Sheds Light on Nattawut’s Decade-long Involvement with Election Commission

Bangkok: The Election Commission is under scrutiny following revelations by former Election Commissioner Somchai Srisutthiyakorn regarding Nattawut Wongniem's activities over the past decade. Somchai has called on the Election Commission to disclose the "mystery figure" supporting Nattawut, who has a history of bribery-related dismissal yet continued to serve in significant roles within the commission.

According to Thai News Agency, Somchai, in a Facebook post, highlighted five specific behaviors of Nattawut, questioning the influence behind his sustained association with the Election Commission. The post scrutinized Nattawut's dismissal from the government for accepting bribes and his subsequent appointments as a subcommittee member and expert witness.

In 2015, Nattawut was accused of accepting a bribe to influence a case at the Samut Prakan Provincial Prosecutor's Office. This led to his dismissal in 2018, a decision upheld by the Supreme Administrative Court in 2022. Despite this, between 2019 and 2021, he served as a subcommittee member for resolving disputes. He also claims to have been a research advisor for the Election Commission's Professional Development Program and was involved in recent elections as a candidate for political parties.

Somchai raised questions about the Election Commission's decisions to nominate Nattawut in various capacities, despite his controversial past. He demanded transparency regarding the individual or individuals within the commission responsible for these appointments and the potential influence stemming from shared academic backgrounds.

Somchai's revelations have prompted calls for clarity and accountability within the Election Commission, casting a spotlight on its internal operations and decision-making processes. The public awaits further developments as the commission faces pressure to address these allegations and reveal any hidden influences behind Nattawut's enduring involvement.
