Bangkok: The cumulative number of travelers over three days of Songkran 2026 was 7.8 million using public transportation.
According to Thai News Agency, the Ministry of Transport has released the cumulative travel figures for the three-day Songkran holiday (April 10-12, 2026), revealing that over 7.8 million people used public transportation and that accidents decreased by 30%. The ministry requests the public to drive cautiously and strictly adhere to traffic laws.
The Transportation Safety Operations Center (TSOC) of the Ministry of Transport has summarized data on transportation networks during the Songkran festival 2026 (April 10-12, 2026) (data as of April 13, 2026, 7:00 AM). The report indicates that public transportation systems were sufficient to accommodate the needs of the public, with no stranded passengers. A total of 7,817,280 people traveled using public transportation, a decrease of 0.11% compared to the same period last year (April 11-13, 2025). Rail systems accounted for the highest proportion of usage, accounting for 44 percent. The highest number of users in each region are: Central Region (outbound air travel) 156,888 people, Southern Region (rail travel) 98,881 people, Northeastern Region (road travel) 109,751 people, Northern Region (road travel) 65,335 people, and Eastern Region (road travel) 62,525 people. International public transport travel totaled 735,064 people. Traffic entering and exiting Bangkok on 12 major highways amounted to 3,198,641 v ehicles, an increase of 1.29 percent. Travel within Bangkok on expressways managed by the Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT) amounted to 3,871,455 vehicles, a decrease of 6.86 percent.
Regarding safety measures, the Ministry of Transport inspected the readiness of public buses at 222 checkpoints, rest areas, and stops nationwide, inspecting a total of 47,159 buses and finding no defects. Simultaneously, they inspected 172 ports and piers, inspecting 2,530 boats, finding defects and ordering repairs on 13 vessels. All trains were inspected and found to be free of defects. Furthermore, no alcohol or drugs were found in the systems of any of the personnel involved.
According to accident statistics on the Ministry of Transport's road network from April 10-12, 2026 (cumulative 3 days), there were a total of 535 accidents on the land network, resulting in 488 injuries and 75 deaths. The main cause was speeding, accounting for 339 incidents (63%). The vehicle most involved in accidents was pickup trucks/4-wheel trucks (314 vehicles). Most accidents occurred on straight, flat roads (391 incidents, 73%). Phitsanulok province had the highest number of fatalities (5 deaths), while Bangkok had the highest number of accidents (33). Compared to the same period last year, accidents decreased by 30%, fatalities decreased by 18%, and injuries decreased by 31%. Public transport buses experienced 3 accidents with no injuries or fatalities. There were no reported accidents on the waterways or air networks.
The Ministry of Transport requests the cooperation of the public to strictly adhere to traffic laws, avoid speeding, and refrain from consuming alcohol before and while driving, for their own safety and the safety of other road users.
