Bangkok: Thailand's Songkran festival has propelled the nation to the number one spot globally in April 2026, with global brands leveraging 'Som Tum' (papaya salad) to further develop Thailand's soft power into fashion.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Sabida Thaiseth, the Minister of Culture, announced that the Songkran festival in 2026 attracted overwhelming interest from tourists worldwide. Thailand was named the world's top destination in April 2026 by Big 7 Travel, a global online travel publication from the United Kingdom. This accolade underscores the cultural significance and global appeal of "Thai Songkran," a unique cultural heritage that offers experiences filled with joy, warmth, and friendship to people worldwide.
The Minister of Culture emphasized that 'Thai Songkran is not just a festival of fun, but a space for relationships, a time for family and friends to connect, and an opportunity for strangers to share happiness and create beautiful memories together. This charm of Thai culture is a genuine experience that the world can partake in.' It is projected that during the 2026 Songkran festival, over 6.5 million people, both Thais and foreigners, will engage in activities nationwide, contributing an economic impact of at least 30 billion baht.
This year, Thailand's soft power has seen significant growth on a global scale. Notably, Nike, a global sports brand, launched a special edition shoe, the Nike Dunk Low 'Som Tum,' inspired by the Thai dish 'Som Tum' (papaya salad), creatively incorporating Thai identity in its design.
This shoe design features a color palette of orange, green, and white, symbolizing papaya and chili peppers, along with details that echo Thai lifestyles, such as a "mortar and pestle" pattern, woven materials resembling a rice basket, the embroidered Thai word "Nike," and a graphic of a jasmine rice bag. This integration of Thai culture into the global fashion scene is remarkable.
The Minister remarked, 'This phenomenon shows that Thai culture is not confined to the country but can reach an international level, creating added value in new dimensions within the creative economy and the fashion industry. The success of Songkran this year is attributed not to any single organization, but to 'all Thai people' who warmly hosted and welcomed tourists from around the world. I extend my gratitude to all citizens who showcased kindness, generosity, and the Thai smile, and to those who participated in the 'Proud to Wear Thai Attire Across the Nation' activities, which beautifully reflected national culture. These elements made Thai Songkran more than just a festival, but a memorable global experience.'
The public and tourists are encouraged to experience the charm of Thai Songkran in various areas where celebrations continue. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Culture remains dedicated to promoting and enhancing Thailand's cultural capital to drive the economy, society, and the country's global image sustainably.
