Chiang Mai: The first day of Songkran in Chiang Mai Province saw increased liveliness as temperatures rose, particularly around the moat and Thapae Gate Square. Here, foreign tourists gathered to enjoy water activities and celebrate.
According to Thai News Agency, both Thai and foreign tourists, along with local residents, joined in the festivities in the afternoon. Participants donned colorful costumes and carried water-spraying equipment. The area around Tha Phae Gate, adjacent to the moat, filled with pickup trucks, motorcycles, and vehicles equipped with water tanks, all contributing to the bustling celebration.
Tourists expressed their intentions to visit Chiang Mai specifically for the water festivities. For many foreigners, experiencing Songkran in Thailand, particularly in Chiang Mai, is a must-do at least once in their lifetime. The festival offers more than water activities; it also showcases cultural elements such as the Khuang Pratu Tha Phae area, where traditional decorations and a sand pagoda contest to uphold Lanna culture take place.
Vendors in the area set up booths selling water guns, waterproof bags, bowls, jasmine necklaces, food, and drinks. However, the most popular item each year remains ice cubes, as participants seek to refresh and enjoy the Songkran festival with added fun by cooling down with icy water.
