Sophon Confirms Constitutional Amendment Agenda Set for July 7-8

Bangkok: Sophon Saram, House Speaker, has confirmed that the constitutional amendment agenda will be discussed in the joint parliamentary session scheduled for July 7-8, 2026. He expressed confidence that all parties will honor the voice of the people as expressed in the referendum.

According to Thai News Agency, the inclusion of the draft constitutional amendment on the agenda follows discussions among the whips of three parties, with several parties already receiving the draft amendments. Mr. Saram highlighted the significance of the constitution and noted that while it generally requires extensive deliberation, expedited consultations by the committee could accelerate the process. He emphasized the necessity of rapid progress to facilitate subsequent steps.

Addressing concerns about potential friction between Members of Parliament and Senators, and the "blue regime" rhetoric, Mr. Sophon stated that such discussions are part of the democratic process and should not hinder the amendment's consideration. He reiterated that the public's desire for constitutional amendments, as voted in the referendum, will be respected by all parties involved. The outcome will depend on the discussions within Parliament, but the voice of the people remains paramount.

When questioned about the "blue regime" allegations, Mr. Sophon urged against labeling it as a political attack. He described it as the expression of opinions and acknowledged that some friction is natural in a democracy. He stressed that political colors should not be seen as obstacles, as the focus should be on benefiting the people.
