Sophon Emphasizes Dignity and Security for Parliamentary Police

Bangkok: Sophon Saram, President of the Parliament, has delivered new policy directives aimed at reinforcing the dignity and integrity of the parliamentary police. The directives emphasize strict security protocols and the prohibition of drug involvement among officers, mandating urine tests for all parliamentary personnel before commencing their duties.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Sophon Saram addressed parliamentary police officers, security personnel, and vehicle management officers from the Finance and Budget Office. He highlighted that parliamentary civil servants hold a status equal in honor and dignity to other civil servants. With the Parliament undergoing development, Mr. Saram stressed the necessity for all personnel to be prepared for impending changes. A committee has been established to review and update outdated regulations to enhance work efficiency and ensure officers uphold their duties with honor and dignity.

Mr. Saram further instructed parliamentary police officers to maintain conduct befitting their role, encouraging continuous training and a strong focus on security. He cited an example that, since his tenure as a Member of Parliament, no parliamentary police officer has forcibly removed a member from the chamber upon the Speaker's request, reflecting the need for improved enforcement protocols.

Following the policy announcement, urine tests were administered to the parliamentary police officers. Mr. Sophon stated in an interview that officials from the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) were invited to conduct these tests, addressing the pressing issues of drug abuse and national security concerns among parliamentary personnel.
