Bangkok: Deputy Prime Minister and Bhumjaithai Party MP, Sophon Saram, addressed recent rumors regarding his potential candidacy for Speaker of the House of Representatives. He clarified his position amid discussions on the swift formation of a new government following the convening of parliament.
According to Thai News Agency, Sophon Saram stated that the Election Commission has already certified the MPs, and the next procedural steps include party-list MPs reporting for duty. Subsequently, the Secretary-General of the House of Representatives will issue a letter to the government to request royal assent from His Majesty the King to convene the House of Representatives. Following this, the election of the Speaker of the House will take place.
In response to inquiries about the government formation timeline, Mr. Sophon expressed optimism that the government could be established promptly once parliament convenes, although he emphasized the need to consider global trends in the process. He did not confirm whether the Kla Tham Party would be part of the coalition government and was uncertain about the coalition's seat numbers.
When questioned about the Pheu Thai Party's intention to nominate Ms. Monporn Charoensri for the position of Deputy Speaker of the House, Sophon indicated that this was a matter for the Pheu Thai Party to decide. He assured that if he were appointed as Speaker, he could work collaboratively with all parties involved.
