Bangkok: Deputy Prime Minister Sophon Saram has dismissed speculation regarding his potential appointment as Speaker of the House of Representatives, clarifying that he has not been approached for the position and is awaiting confirmation from the Election Commission.
According to Thai News Agency, Sophon, a prominent member of the Bhumjaithai Party, addressed the ongoing rumors by emphasizing that they are unfounded at this stage. He stressed the importance of waiting for the official certification of the House of Representatives by the Election Commission (EC), acknowledging that there are still unresolved issues within the process. However, he expressed optimism that these matters would be settled soon.
When questioned about his preparedness to assume the role of Speaker, Mr. Sophon expressed a commitment to excellence in any position he holds, reflecting on his previous service as an MP and his current role overseeing drug-related affairs as Deputy Prime Minister. He reiterated that he always strives to perform his duties to the best of his ability.
Regarding his potential management style for parliamentary sessions, should he be appointed, Sophon indicated that discussions would only commence once he is officially designated. He highlighted the necessity of adhering to procedural norms and awaiting the Election Commission's certification before any formal talks.
When further queried about the possibility of the First and Second Deputy Speakers of the House also being from the Bhumjaithai Party, Sophon declined to speculate, noting that it was premature to address such questions. He humorously remarked on the legal and regulatory intricacies of the role, suggesting that he had yet to delve deeply into them.
Expressing a general willingness to serve in either executive or legislative capacities, Mr. Sophon underlined his philosophy of striving for excellence regardless of the position held. He emphasized the importance of actions speaking louder than titles, suggesting that good deeds would be recognized and rewarded, while shortcomings would naturally attract criticism. He concluded by sharing his daily practice of reflecting on the Eightfold Path, reminding himself of the transient nature of power and possessions.
In a lighter moment, when asked whether he had practiced chairing a cabinet meeting, Sophon humorously responded that he had been asked to act as the interim chairman, maintaining a relaxed demeanor amidst the ongoing speculation.
