Southern Thai Airports Brace for Heavy Rainfall and Potential Flooding

Bangkok:The Department of Airports in Thailand is gearing up to handle significant rainfall expected in the southern region. In response to weather warnings affecting 10 provinces, the department has been instructed to prioritize passenger safety and maintain vigilant monitoring.

According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Minister of Transport, Mr. Patarapong Pataraprasit, has directed the Department of Airports to ensure that airports under its jurisdiction in the southern provinces are well-prepared for the forecasted heavy rains. The Meteorological Department has predicted continuous and intense rainfall, while the National Water Resources Office has warned of possible flooding and landslides from October 23-26, 2026, in provinces including Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, and others.

The Airports Department has been asked to synchronize weather forecasts and aviation meteorological data with relevant agencies, ensuring the sharing of up-to-date information on water levels and flood risks. Coordination with provincial disaster prevention offices will also be crucial in assessing and mitigating risks surrounding airports and access routes. The department has emphasized the importance of keeping drainage systems clear and monitoring runway conditions to promptly address any potential issues.

Passenger safety remains a top priority, with protocols in place to restrict or suspend airport operations if necessary. Accurate information will be continuously provided to pilots, and coordination with air traffic control and airlines will be strengthened to manage flights and passenger care.

Narathiwat Airport is currently collaborating with local authorities to enhance its drainage systems, with plans to increase pumping capacity and dredge drainage canals. Other southern airports are also reviewing contingency and emergency response plans to ensure effective coordination with local agencies and minimize disruptions to passenger travel. The Department of Airports participated in a recent preparedness meeting to reinforce these measures and integrate monitoring efforts across the transportation sector.
