The collapse occurred on June 20, 2026, at approximately 4:30 PM, at the Doi Luang railway tunnel construction site in the Doi Luang District of Chiang Rai Province. The tragedy struck while contractors were installing a waterproofing system inside the tunnel, part of the Den Chai - Chiang Rai - Chiang Khong railway construction project.
The collapse claimed the lives of Mr. Apidech, 24, from Kanchanaburi Province, and Mr. Tu, 29, a Myanmar national. Two additional workers sustained serious injuries and were promptly transported to Doi Luang Hospital and Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital for medical care.
In the aftermath of the incident, project safety officers quickly cordoned off the site and coordinated with relevant agencies to initiate an urgent investigation. The SRT has mandated a temporary two-day halt of operations at the site to allow experts and authorities to conduct a comprehensive inspection of the structural integrity and working environment and to determine the cause of the collapse.
The State Railway of Thailand has also instructed its contractors to collaborate closely with the organization in providing full care, compensation, and support to the affected individuals and their families. This includes ensuring medical treatment, legal rights, and other necessary assistance.
Moreover, the SRT has ordered a review of safety protocols for tunnel and large-scale structure construction across all current projects. Contractors, supervisors, and involved parties have been directed to strictly follow safety standards to ensure maximum safety during project execution.
The State Railway of Thailand has committed to keeping the public and media updated on any further developments related to the investigation of the tunnel collapse.
