Bangkok: A steel structure collapse at a construction site on Soi Charoen Krung 36 has raised concerns regarding construction safety after injuring a worker. The incident occurred at 12:18 PM, prompting a swift response from Bang Rak District Office, Bang Rak Fire and Rescue Station officers, Bang Rak volunteer rescue workers, and Bang Rak Police Station officers. The injured male worker was transported to the hospital for treatment.
According to Thai News Agency, the mishap involved an 8-story commercial building under construction, where equipment from a mobile crane snagged, causing the collapse of a steel structure used to store steel pipes for pouring concrete piles. Authorities have since cordoned off the area to ensure safety and prevent public access to the hazardous site. A directive has been issued to halt construction until effective preventive measures are proposed.
Prof. Dr. Amorn Pimanamas, President of the Structural Engineers Association of Thailand, highlighted four points of concern. First, the type of crane involved in the collapse remains unclear, but possibilities include a crawler crane, which might have tipped due to imbalance, overload, or an unstable base. Second, the nature of the construction work is in question, with pile driving suspected, especially since the area appeared waterlogged, potentially compromising the ground's ability to support the crane.
Third, the correctness of operating procedures needs verification, including weight distribution methods and supervision by an engineer. Lastly, the inspection status of the crane and the legal authorization of the operator are under scrutiny. These observations are assumptions pending investigation by relevant authorities.
Professor Dr. Amorn emphasized the frequent occurrence of crane collapses and urged Bangkok to implement regulations establishing safety standards for construction, addressing issues like crane collapses, falling objects, dust, noise, and vibration to enhance public safety.
