Bangkok: Bangkok Metropolitan Police successfully apprehended the "Straw Hat Thief" responsible for stealing 164 baht worth of gold from a well-known shopping mall in the Sukhumvit area. The arrest took place in Chiang Rai province, with the suspect later brought to Bangkok for further investigation. The suspect confessed that challenging life circumstances led him to commit the crime, emulating tactics from detective movies.
According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Lt. Gen. Nophasin Phoolsawat, Commander of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, coordinated with Pol. Maj. Gen. Chotiwat Lueangwilai and other investigators to arrest Mr. Chalo, 29, who was wanted on an arrest warrant for the robbery. The suspect was flown from Chiang Rai Province to Phra Khanong Police Station, where Pol. Lt. Gen. Siam Boonsom personally interrogated him.
The police commissioner detailed that the crime had been meticulously planned over an extended period. The suspect stole a motorcycle during the New Year period, using it to conceal his identity while evading arrest. It took the investigative team over 20 days to identify the suspects through CCTV footage. The suspects had initially surveyed the gold shop but returned the following day, exploiting a moment when the mall and shop were less crowded. They used a fake gun and water to intimidate the staff before making off with the gold.
Following the heist, the suspect employed elaborate methods to mislead police, including abandoning the motorcycle in a canal and escaping to Lopburi Province. On February 1st, he traveled to his hometown in Chiang Rai Province, carrying the stolen gold. He instructed a friend to sell the gold in Myanmar to avoid detection in Thailand.
During questioning, the suspect admitted to the crime, claiming financial need as his motive. He revealed that he utilized techniques from detective movies to disguise himself. Despite his previous arrests and prison time, he showed no remorse, stating he was compelled to steal the gold under the circumstances. He entrusted the gold to a friend in Myanmar to prevent being caught for receiving stolen goods.
The suspect received 200,000 baht in advance from the gold sale and 700,000 baht in gambling chips, ultimately retaining 300,000 baht. This money was used to purchase two motorcycles and sustain himself while evading capture.
Despite being arrested, the suspect showed no regret, asserting that circumstances forced his decision. Police are continuing their investigation, focusing on recovering the remaining 164 baht worth of gold.
