Suchart Chomklin Defends Social Security Fund Amid Political Criticism

Bangkok: Suchart Chomklin, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, has firmly refuted recent criticisms aimed at the Social Security Fund, emphasizing its profitability and cautioning against political exploitation of the issue. He highlighted that those attacking the fund will face repercussions after February 8th, while also addressing the controversy surrounding the provision of suits for low-paid employees.

According to Thai News Agency, Suchart, in his former role as Minister of Labour, addressed the ongoing criticisms directed at the Social Security Office. He argued for fairness towards civil servants and Social Security officials who are advocating for their rights. Suchart clarified that the Social Security Fund, established 36 years ago, operates independently under a tripartite committee, with the Minister's role limited to policy oversight, not interference. He stressed that the fund, comprising contributions from employers, employees, and the government, has grown from 1.7 trillion baht to 2.9 trillion baht through interest and returns. The Office of the Auditor General audits the fund annually, and explanations are provided to the House of Representatives, indicating that the accusations stem from a misunderstanding of the fund's management system.

Suchart further explained that any mistakes in investments are monitored by the State Audit Office and the National Anti-Corruption Commission, and that ministers do not bear responsibility for the fund's investments. He highlighted the fear among potential investment board members of being slandered by MPs, questioning the fund's future without such a board.

Addressing the suit-making controversy, Suchart expressed support for low-paid Social Security civil servants, noting their desire for uniforms despite earning modest salaries of 9,000-10,000 baht. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the dignity of these civil servants.

In response to allegations related to the Sky Nine building purchase, Suchart stated that he has initiated a lawsuit in the Central Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct, which has been accepted. He questioned the basis of accusations against him, arguing that the court's acceptance of the lawsuit and the bail release of two MPs involved indicate the matter's merit.

When questioned about the potential impact of the Social Security discussions on the Bhumjaithai Party's votes, Suchart maintained that legal proceedings are underway and reiterated his position as a victim of false accusations. He emphasized that the investment board operates independently and that the current rhetoric has deterred knowledgeable individuals from participating. He posed a rhetorical question about the sufficiency of interest from traditional bank deposits without an investment fund board to manage the Social Security Fund.
