Chonburi: Suchart Somklin, a member of the Bhumjaithai Party and winner of the Chonburi Constituency 1 parliamentary election, has expressed his willingness to have the votes recounted while raising concerns about media impartiality.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Suchart issued a statement addressing concerns about election transparency and calls for a recount. He revealed that he had previously communicated with the Chairman of the Election Commission on February 8th regarding his intentions about the election and vote counting processes.
Mr. Suchart highlighted that claims from various parties are causing confusion about the election process, which might unsettle the public, particularly in Chonburi province and his constituency, covering all eight sub-districts in Mueang Chonburi district. This situation could undermine confidence in the democratic process, an essential foundation for the country's stability.
To ensure transparency and fairness, Mr. Suchart affirmed his readiness to cooperate with legal procedures, allowing thorough scrutiny and willingly accepting a recount if it aligns with the legal framework. He emphasized that his actions are aimed at eliminating doubts and building public trust, prioritizing the people's interests and the democratic system's stability.
In an interview following the press conference, Mr. Suchart asserted that opposing or contesting the election, as legally allowed, should be a right for the people in Constituency 1. He questioned the legitimacy of those making accusations and inciting movements, noting that many of them are not local voters. He also expressed concerns about the motivations behind these movements.
Mr. Suchart urged the media to maintain journalistic ethics and neutrality, pointing out inconsistencies in news coverage, particularly in incidents like power outages in Chonburi compared to other provinces. He expressed his disappointment over perceived unfair treatment in media reporting, despite his openness to engaging with the media.
