Sukhothai Prepares for Impending Floodwaters as Phayao Faces Landslides and Fatalities

Bangkok: The province of Sukhothai is taking swift action to manage the drainage of the Yom River in anticipation of incoming floodwaters from Pong District, Phayao. Efforts are being accelerated to mitigate potential flooding as water from Phayao continues to flow downstream.

According to Thai News Agency, water levels in Pong District have begun to recede after a period of heavy rainfall, which had previously led to a rise in water levels and strong currents. These conditions had trapped residents, necessitating coordinated rescue efforts by community leaders and officials. The floodwaters are now gradually moving through the Yom River towards Phrae and Sukhothai provinces. In response, the Irrigation Department has opened five sluice gates at the Ban Hat Saphan Chan sluice gate in Sukhothai's Sawankhalok District to manage the water inflow from multiple upstream sources.

In Mae Sariang, heavy rains triggered landslides, causing trees and power poles to collapse along the Mae Sariang-Chiang Mai road. The resulting traffic disruption lasted over five hours. The landslides have also temporarily closed Ban Huai Pang Phang School, leaving teachers stranded. Tragically, a resident of Ban Mae Sawan Noi lost his life after being struck by a falling tree. The Mae Sariang district administration is actively working to clear roads and facilitate movement while ensuring resident safety.

Meanwhile, Uttaradit Province is experiencing rising water levels in its reservoirs due to continuous heavy rainfall. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has issued warnings for Lablae District, urging residents to be prepared for potential flash floods and landslides. Residents have been advised to move valuables to higher ground and take precautions against electric shocks. Monitoring of water levels in the area remains ongoing, with no reports of flooding in residential zones thus far.
