Suriya Flies to Nan to Address Rising Flood Concerns

Nan: Suriya Jungrungreangkit, the Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, promptly traveled to Nan province to directly oversee the flood situation following substantial rainfall that caused the Nan River to overflow its banks in several locations.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Suriya canceled his official duties within the Ministry of Agriculture to focus on the flood emergency in Nan province. He received a report from Mr. Wittaya Kaewmee, Director-General of the Royal Irrigation Department, indicating that local irrigation offices are vigilantly monitoring the situation after heavy rainfall contributed to rising water levels in the upper Nan River.

In the last 24 hours, heavy rain has been reported in various areas, including Phanawaswan School in Phuka Subdistrict, Ban Rong Ngaeng community in Woranakorn Subdistrict, and the Lam Nam Kun area in Sila Laeng Subdistrict, Pua District, Nan Province. The Meteorological Department has also issued warnings for potential heavy rainfall in northern and upper northeastern regions.

Mr. Suriya emphasized that all activities within his ministry were suspended so he could assess the flood conditions in Nan province and implement immediate relief measures for farmers and residents. The efforts include relocating personal belongings and livestock, safeguarding agricultural produce, and ensuring the availability of essential supplies like animal feed, medicine, and medical resources.

Residents in vulnerable areas, particularly those in low-lying regions and near rivers, have been urged to stay informed about water levels and adhere to government warnings to prepare for possible changes.

Additionally, Mr. Suriya instructed the Nan Irrigation Project and Irrigation Office Region 2 to maintain round-the-clock monitoring of the water levels and weather. They are to manage water drainage effectively and coordinate with local authorities to mitigate the impact on the community.
