Mae sai: The suspect in the theft of 198 baht worth of gold reenacted the crime before being escorted back to Bangkok by authorities. Police officers took 29-year-old Jalaw Anu to a forested area near the Myanmar border in Chiang Rai Province to identify where he allegedly handed over the stolen gold. The Bangkok Metropolitan Police Commissioner is set to personally interrogate him upon his return.
According to Thai News Agency, Jalaw Anu was involved in a theft at a jewelry store located in a shopping mall in the Phra Khanong area. Upon fleeing Bangkok, Anu traveled to Mae Sai, where he met a close friend, "Dew," also of Hmong ethnicity. Dew arranged for Anu to be transported on a motorcycle to a secluded forest location near the mountains.
Anu confessed to meeting Dew in the forest on the Myanmar side, where he handed over the gold to Dew for sale. From the sale, Dew initially provided Anu with 200,000 baht and promised additional payments on March 7th. However, Anu was apprehended by police before receiving the remaining funds.
The investigation revealed that Anu was addicted to online gambling, frequently traveling to Myanmar to fulfill his gambling pursuits. This addiction reportedly motivated the gold heist. Anu has not yet admitted to any connection with previous similar crimes.
The police operation, led by Pol. Maj. Gen. Nophasil Phoolsawat, is set to transport Anu by plane from Chiang Rai to Phra Khanong Police Station. There, he will be questioned by the Bangkok Metropolitan Police Commissioner. Following the interrogation, the suspect will be taken to the jewelry store crime scene and to an apartment in the Sukhumvit area, where he allegedly planned the heist and his subsequent escape.
