Teng Calls for Accountability During 20th Anniversary of Nawathong Phaiwan’s Death

Bangkok:"Teng" attended the 20th anniversary commemoration of Nawathong Phaiwan, emphasizing the need for Thailand to hold those responsible for staging the coup accountable.

According to Thai News Agency, the event was attended by prominent figures, including Mr. Nattapong Ruangpanyawut, leader of the People's Party and opposition leader in the House of Representatives, and several other MPs and a senator. They gathered at the memorial pillar in front of Thairath TV station to honor the memory of Nawathong Phaiwan.

Mr. Nattapong addressed the attendees, reflecting on a clip featuring Uncle Nuamthong, who asserted the importance of democracy over individual lives. He emphasized the unity in the demand for democracy, noting the evolution of struggle methods from armed conflicts to more subtle forms under the 2017 Constitution.

Highlighting the significance of a recent referendum where over 21 million people sought to abolish the 2017 Constitution, Mr. Nattapong urged the attendees to remember past struggles and continue pushing forward for democratic reforms.

Drawing parallels with South Korea, Mr. Nattapong recounted discussions with the May 18th Foundation about the Gwangju Massacre of 1980 and South Korea's constitutional changes in 1987. He noted the difference in democratic progress between Thailand and South Korea, attributing it to historical erasure in Thailand's education system.

Mr. Nattapong stressed the importance of preserving memories to prevent history from repeating and called for accountability for those who staged coups. He cited South Korea's example, where both corrupt politicians and coup leaders face consequences, unlike in Thailand.

In his concluding remarks, Mr. Nattapong expressed hope for a future democratic Thailand where past injustices are addressed, ensuring a true democratic system with the people as the ultimate authority.
