Tensions Escalate on Thai-Myanmar Border Amid Military Clashes

Mae Sot:The Thai-Myanmar border is experiencing heightened tensions as natural crossing points have been closed for a week due to escalating conflict between the Myanmar military and insurgent groups. The military has enforced these closures to mitigate potential violence, strengthening its presence with additional troops and heavy weaponry to ensure border security.

According to Thai News Agency, the situation has intensified following multiple drone bombing raids conducted by Myanmar troops overnight and into the morning. These attacks targeted areas controlled by resistance groups in Minlapan village, Myawaddy Township, Kayin State, Myanmar, directly opposite Huai Mahawong village in Mae Sot District, Tak Province, Thailand. Both sides are reportedly adjusting their strategies, reinforcing troops and weaponry at the frontline.

In response to the conflict, the Rajamanu Task Force, along with mobile rapid response units and Border Patrol Police, established checkpoints and conducted patrols in affected areas such as Ban Mae Kon Ken and Ban Maha Wan villages. These villages, located near the conflict zone, suffered damage from unexploded ordnance. Despite the damage, only one Thai villager was injured and is currently stable, with support provided.

Major General Prasan Henprasert, Commander of the Naresuan Task Force, has issued an urgent order to suspend all permits for the import and export of goods through non-approved channels in high-risk areas. This suspension affects regions south of the Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge No. 1 in Mae Sot District and Phop Phra District, Tak Province, from October 30th to November 5th, 2026.

Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul has instructed local governors and security officials to prioritize the protection of citizens. He emphasized ongoing communication with neighboring country leaders and warned that Thailand may need to increase self-defense measures if satisfactory actions are not observed.
