Tensions Rise at Thai-Cambodian Border Following Shooting Incident

Sisaket: Tensions have escalated along the Thai-Cambodian border after Cambodian soldiers reportedly fired nine shots into the Huai Ta Maria area of Kantaralak District, Sisaket Province. The incident, which took place on the evening of May 24th, has been described as a provocative act by the Thai authorities, raising concerns about potential international misunderstandings.

According to Thai News Agency, the 2nd Army Area received an urgent report from the Suranaree Task Force, confirming the firing incident. Major General Winthai Suvari, spokesman for the Royal Thai Army, stated that the Army Commander-in-Chief has urged all units to closely monitor threats along the border. He emphasized that the gunfire was unrelated to Cambodia's protests over a proposed reservoir construction, which is still in the conceptual stage and located in a forested area.

"The army is focusing on the unruly behavior of Cambodian soldiers who were trying to provoke a response by firing shots, so that we will retaliate and distort the issue for use in information warfare. In the past, information from the Cambodian side has consistently lacked credibility and contained exaggerated propaganda," Major General Winthai explained.

The army spokesperson highlighted that the provocations are intended to create noise and test the Thai side's response, without the intent to cause harm or damage. In response to any threat, Thai soldiers are instructed to fire no more than five warning shots to suppress the situation. The Thai forces have encountered various disruptive actions in the past, including verbal challenges and other provocations, and are encouraged to respond calmly based on the facts.

In light of the recent events, the army has increased surveillance in four high-risk border areas: Preah Vihear and Huai Ta Maria in Sisaket province; Chong Chom and Prasat Ta Muen Thom in Surin province; and Chong Bok in Ubon Ratchathani province.

Furthermore, recent reports indicate that the Army has directed personnel to prioritize four key areas: enhancing surveillance, upgrading military bases, improving strategic routes, and accelerating mine clearance along the border. Information will also be shared through the Sub-GBC mechanism to strengthen agreements on mine clearance and suppress scammer gangs, aiming to maintain peace and order along the border.
