Teochew Association of Thailand Celebrates 200th Anniversary of Lao Pun Tao Kong Shrine with Historic Parade

Bangkok: A grand celebration marked the 200th anniversary of the Lao Pun Tao Kong Shrine (Song Wat) as the Teochew Association of Thailand organized a historic ceremony. For the first time in two centuries, the revered Lao Pun Tao Kong statue was paraded around Yaowarat on a royal carriage, allowing the Chinese-Thai community in the commercial district to pay their respects and seek blessings.

According to Thai News Agency, the event coincided with the golden anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and China, symbolizing the enduring friendship between the two nations. The Lao Pun Tao Kong Shrine, originating from the faith of Chinese immigrants, has remained a spiritual pillar for its community. In honor of this milestone, a procession traversed Yaowarat Road, Ratchawong Road, and Song Wat Road over a distance of 2.4 kilometers. Thai-Chinese residents and tourists alike participated, setting up tables adorned with incense, candles, and offerings to seek good fortune.

Additionally, a commemorative coin featuring Lao Pun Tao Kong was created, and a Deva Abhiseka ceremony took place, led by Luang Pho Yen Kao, the abbot of Wat Phothitaram in Chonburi Province. The ceremony included prayers from Chinese monks and renowned teachers, aiming to bless the coin with sacred properties. The celebration will continue from March 1-3, 2025, with weekly opportunities for the public to join in honoring Lao Pun Tao Kong at the shrine every Sunday throughout the year.
