Thai Army Deploys Third Shift of Troops for Earthquake Relief in Myanmar

Bangkok: The Thai Army has dispatched its third shift of troops to assist in the aftermath of the recent earthquake in Myanmar. This deployment underscores Thailand’s commitment to humanitarian aid and regional leadership in disaster response.

According to Thai News Agency, General Ukrit Boontanon, Deputy Supreme Commander, oversaw the ceremony at the 2nd Military Airport in Bangkok. The troops, part of ‘Operation Mandalay 82’, will join efforts to aid those affected by the 8.2-magnitude earthquake that struck the Mandalay area on March 28.

Key figures, including Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Health, and Mr. Worapan Srivoranart, Deputy Director-General of the Department of East Asian Affairs, attended the ceremony. They, along with representatives from related agencies, emphasized Thailand’s dedication to supporting Myanmar during this crisis.

The Permanent Secretary conveyed gratitude towards the Royal Thai Army and mission participants, highlighting the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of those affected. He extended wishes for the safe and effective execution of their mission.

Previously, the Thai government tasked the Royal Thai Army Headquarters with forming the ‘Myanmar Earthquake Relief Team’ under the Military Operations Department’s guidance. This involved comprehensive planning to provide multifaceted assistance.

The third special task force comprises 17 personnel from various divisions, joining 29 personnel from the second shift, totaling 46 members. They are accompanied by a 30-member medical team from the Ministry of Public Health.

The task force’s primary mission is to deliver continuous humanitarian aid by collaborating with the Myanmar government to offer medical care, rehabilitate disaster zones, and alleviate both physical and mental distress. The Mobile Clinic, operated by the Medical Task Force (MERT), has reached remote areas, providing care to 160 individuals. Meanwhile, the engineering team has constructed temporary shelters and lighting systems, supported communications, and distributed donations to victims.

This mission highlights the Royal Thai Armed Forces’ role as a regional leader in humanitarian efforts and reflects Thailand’s commitment to supporting its neighbors, fostering a resilient and enduring friendship between the two nations.
